ABOUT FRIENDS OF PULLMAN
Based in Historic Pullman, Chicago, Illinois Friends of Pullman is a private, non-profit organization that serves the community. Friends of Pullman was created to restore and recreate George Pullmans 1880`s Model Town concept in Chicago Illinois. By learning from its past and not repeating its mistakes we strive to once again be a self sustaining model town known as the worlds most perfect town. Friends of Pullman houses and supports several community enrichment programs that seek to harness the energy and creativity of the residents to promote positive and relevant change to the community and its surroundings. Reinventing Pullmans Grand Scale Plan we utilize our rich history and strategic partnerships to fund our solutions
In 1880 George Pullman began constructing his model town and factory site 12 miles south of Chicago. This ideal town was designed on the notion that if the employees manufacturing his sleeper cars lived and worked in a beautiful setting, they would work harder and better. Pullman was considered by many to be the world's most perfect town. Unfortunately that reputation did not last. Pullman's strict rules and unfair wages lead to the town's demise.
Today Pullman looks much as it did in the 1880's, and offers visitors the chance to experience a living museum and the residents the chance to live in one. Since our towns creation over 100 years ago the residents have been considered pioneers of Chicago's South-Side and that holds true today. We are a community that acts more like a family. One that embraces our differences and harnesses the energy and creativity of its residents to once again create the Utopia that was the vision of Pullman by its creator.
